Statement

Dear Neighbors,

The past two weeks were a monumental time for our Supreme Court. The decision on King V. Burwell is a major win for all of my neighbors who will avoid significant increases in health insurance costs. The ACA has been successful in providing health insurance to millions of Americans, and hundreds of thousands in Illinois alone, giving patients more control over their health care coverage. While it isn't perfect legislation, this decision is a step in the right direction.

In addition to the health care decision, The Supreme Court also ruled in favor of equality, love and commitment by supporting marriage equality last week. The LGBT community is entitled to the same rights afforded to everyone else and our nation has taken an enormous step towards being more fair and just. This ruling is yet another example of our nation's progress towards a more perfect union and I hope that it further inspires us to seek equality for all Americans.

In Washington, I hosted Ryoka Lulu Matsuno, the winner of the 8th Congressional District Art Competition, for the Congressional Art Competition National Reception on Capitol Hill. It was exciting to celebrate with her and see her art on display in the Capitol.

I also became a cosponsor of the 21st Century Cures Act. This legislation will improve our research, development and delivery of treatments by delivering $10 billion in new resources for the National Institute of Health (NIH). In addition, I became an original cosponsor of the Savings Federal Dollars Through Better Use of Government Purchase and Travel Cards Act which would improve oversight and accountability within the federal government. Lastly on the legislative front, I cosponsored on a House Resolution honoring the Chicago Blackhawks on their 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Championship.

As Congress adjourned this week for the Fourth of July District Work Period, I am disappointed we were not able to pass an extension for the Export-Import Bank. The Export-Import Bank supported more than 40 businesses and over 1,700 jobs in my Congressional district over the last 6 years. It's one of the reasons why Illinois is the 5th largest exporting state in the country. Members on both sides of the aisle understand the importance of investing in American manufacturing and when we are back in session next week I will work to reinstate the Bank.

Back in the 8th, my District Office hosted an Open House to inform our neighbors about all the offerings and services and how to get help from our office. It was great to meet so many of my neighbors. If you missed the open house, I encourage you to drop by anytime and say hello to staff or get help with a Federal issue.

Lastly, I urge you to stay connected with my office! You can follow my updates on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. I wish you all a happy and safe Independence Day weekend!

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Duckworth
