Issue Position: Prevent a Nuclear and Belligerent Iran

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2015

Adopt My Eight Principles. We must adhere to these Eight Principles as the basis for any agreement with Iran, which will prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons, ensure that sanctions are never lifted without verifying Iran has a proven record of compliance, maintain our ability to inspect related sites anywhere and anytime, quickly re-impose sanctions after any violation, and hold Iran accountable not just for its nuclear program but for its global terror program.

Refuse a Bad Deal. Any deal that does not meet the objectives laid out in my Eight Principles will fail to permanently prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and must be opposed. This issue is fundamental to our ability to secure our nation and stop radical Islamic terrorist organizations from obtaining the means to kill Americans on an unprecedented scale. We must not be naïve regarding a nation whose leaders chant "Death to America" in their streets; we must stand absolutely firm.

Turn Back the Spread of Influence. Iran's support of rogue regimes, such as Syria's Bashar al Assad, as well as radical Islamic terrorist groups, has sown chaos and destruction throughout the Middle East. Its interference in the politics and conflicts of its neighbors has destabilized the region, alarmed our allies, and put our nation and our interests around the world at risk. As we reassert American leadership and bring renewed clarity of purpose to our foreign policy, stopping the spread of Iranian influence and its terrorist financing network must be one of our strategic aims.
