Starting this January, Californians will be forced to pay an estimated 13 to 20 cents per gallon as part of a new hidden gas tax. This is because California is now including fuel in its controversial cap-and-trade program and the costs will be passed to consumers who are already struggling to make ends meet. While we all want clean air and reduced pollution, the proceeds from the hidden gas tax may not do anything to accomplish those goals. Instead, California has mandated that 25% of the funds generated from cap-and-trade go to funding High Speed Rail which studies have shown will have limited effects on reducing pollution. I strongly oppose the hidden gas tax and will work in Sacramento to see this flawed policy reversed. The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has endorsed me.
