DURBIN STATEMENT REGARDING MEDICARE
Wednesday, February 9, 2005
[WASHINGTON, DC] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement regarding the new Bush administration estimate of the cost of Medicare's new prescription drug program: "This is what happens when you forbid Medicare from negotiating lower prices from pharmaceutical companies, and you forbid Medicare employees from telling the truth about how much the law will cost until after it's passed. We must put providing real help for seniors ahead of lining the pockets of the corporations that benefit when seniors get sick," said Durbin. "Tomorrow, I am re-introducing legislation that will provide a prescription drug benefit within the traditional Medicare program and require the Administration to negotiate on behalf of seniors to bring down the exorbitant costs of those needed medications."
