Today, Congressman Kevin Cramer questioned the USDA's decision to force student-run restaurants at Fargo Davies and Fargo South High Schools to follow USDA nutritional guidelines.
"This is what is wrong with Washington, D.C. Instead of supporting and working with students running these restaurants they plan to penalize them with needless regulations. Students are getting real world experience in running a business and preparing meals for customers. I urge the USDA to reconsider their decision," said Cramer.
Cramer went on to say, "Encouraging our children to develop healthy nutrition habits plays an important role in solving our nation's overall health challenges. However, the current nutrition standards which went into effect in 2012 have proven to be burdensome and costly for school districts across the country. Although the USDA claims their implementation of the law has been based on science from the Institute of Medicine, it has become apparent the scientific data were not thoughtfully translated into policy."
Congressman Cramer is a co-sponsor of the Reducing Federal Mandates on School Lunch Act to give local school districts flexibility implementing these nutritional guidelines.
