Lois is a friend to our schools, parents and taxpayers. She understands that we must improve education to make sure our children are ready for the jobs of tomorrow. That's why she wants to explore new ways to reward those gifted educators out there who don't just educate, but also motivate. As a parent, she's fought against CSCOPE and the "common core" efforts that lead to a ridiculous reliance on standardized testing. She's helped our teachers stop "teaching to the test" and get back to inspiring the students. Education is the biggest part of the Texas state budget, which is why she's worked for over a decade to cut burdensome regulations on our schools. A high-cost bureaucracy will drive up taxes and keep our teachers from doing their job, so Lois has fought to cut the mandates and make sure more of our education funding reaches the classroom. She protected the integrity of the multi-billion dollar Teacher Retirement System. With her bill (HB 1259 81R), Lois closed the door on insider deals and conflicts-of-interest by those who oversee the fund. A friend to the teachers, Lois received the coveted "Friend of Education Award" from the Sam Houston State University College of Education. With student debt topping over $1 trillion, she made national news with a Texas-style solution to empower students and parents in our state universities. Her bill (HB 2504 81R) was the first in the nation to see that colleges must post a course syllabus online before students enroll, so students can make informed decisions about the courses they (and their parents) are spending money on each semester.
