U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) issued the following statement after voting yes onH.R. 5759, Executive Amnesty Prevention Act. The bill, which reaffirms that the president does not have the authority to offer amnesty to illegal immigrants, passed the House today 219-197.
"The president does not have the constitutional authority to grant amnesty to millions of people who have broken the law by entering our country illegally. President Obama's executive action on immigration is wrong and violates the responsibility of Congress to write and pass laws as outlined in our Constitution.
"Every year, millions of immigrants apply for U.S. green cards and citizenship and wait their turn in line. Many wait for years for a chance to enjoy the American dream legally. It is unfair to them and a disgrace to our Constitution's separation of powers to allow millions who have violated our nation's immigration laws to get skip-the-line passes ahead of those who are waiting lawfully.
"The message the House has sent today is clear -- the president has far exceeded his constitutional authority. I will continue to oppose any efforts to offer amnesty and will work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure America's Constitution is abided by and upheld."
