Senator Johnson made the following remarks commemorating Veterans Day:
"It's appropriate that Veterans Day is a peaceful holiday -- not celebrated with fireworks, as on Independence Day. This provides the quiet time we need to commemorate Veterans Day in the best way -- by remembering the veterans who made a difference in our lives.
"For many of us, it is a veteran whose name we know. A father, a grandfather, a sister or uncle -- these are the finest among us, Americans who said they would stand strong between danger and the country we love. For me, it was my father and father-in-law, my cousins, a nephew, and many friends. We are blessed that so many are still with us so that we can sincerely thank them. For many whose lives were enriched by a veteran who served in World War II, the time for saying "thank you" has passed. I hope we all said it enough.
"But beyond those we know personally, every American has reason to remember veterans today. Our country is free and united because of the service and sacrifice of men and women throughout our history. Every day that we live our lives in peaceful liberty, we are connected to the veterans who have defeated tyranny for more than two centuries. Those veterans came home and continued to serve America by building this country brick by brick. Today, we should think about their contributions in securing the blessings of freedom for all of us, and we should take time to thank a veteran."
