Murphy Statement on President's Commitment to Draft New AUMF for Fight Against ISIL

Statement

Date: Nov. 5, 2014
Location: Hartford, CT

Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) released the following statement in response to President Obama's call for a new authorization for use of military force (AUMF) to defeat ISIL. Murphy has consistently called for a new AUMF for the military strategy in Iraq and Syria.

I'm encouraged by President Obama's desire to work with Congress to craft a new authorization for use of military force for the fight against ISIL. We should have taken up this issue before Congress left for recess, as the September 11, 2001 AUMF under which we're currently operating does not apply to the fight we are in against ISIL. As I've said for months, a debate in Congress over the president's proposals for military action is integral to our constitutional responsibility and should happen as soon as we get back to Washington. Too much is at stake to delay the debate any longer.
