Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month:
"Hello, I'm Congressman Chris Van Hollen and I represent Maryland's 8th Congressional District.
"Monday, September 15th marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries. During this month-long celebration, we come together as a nation to honor and pay tribute to the extraordinary contributions the Latino community has made to our country.
"Latinos continue to lead on important issues in every field of endeavor. During this month, I am honored to recognize the efforts of many groups in my district and throughout the state of Maryland that work to strengthen our community.
"For example, Ana G. Mendez University, the first Hispanic-serving institution in Maryland, celebrated its first graduating class this past May.
"And Diego Uriburu, Executive Director of Identity, Inc., in Montgomery County, was recognized by the White House earlier this year as a "Champion of Change" for his work to improve access to educational and employment opportunities for under-served immigrant youth.
"These are just a few examples of the work being done by Latinos in our community and country. As we honor the achievements of Latinos, we know that celebrating for one month is not enough. Unfortunately, some of our colleagues in Congress refuse to work with us to pass important legislation to fix our broken immigration system.
"It has now been over one year since the Senate passed comprehensive immigration reform, and Speaker Boehner still refuses to let the House vote on this important bill that has the overwhelming support of the American people.
"I will continue to fight for comprehensive immigration reform that will secure our borders, unite families and offer an earned pathway to citizenship.
"I'm honored to join with others around the country to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month."
