My Fellow Citizens

Statement

Date: Oct. 15, 2014

When I first asked the voters of South Carolina's 6th Congressional District to send me to Congress, I promised to put service above self and principles above politics.

I am especially proud of the role I played in the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Because of the ACA, you can no longer be dropped from insurance coverage when you get sick, or be denied insurance coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

Because of the ACA, your children can stay on your insurance policy until they turn 26 years old, and insurance companies must send refunds to their customers if they fail to payout 80% of their collected premiums in benefits.

Because of the ACA, the dreaded "donut hole" is being closed and preventive care for seniors is covered.

I am working with my fellow Democrats to protect and grow America's middle class. Congress needs to create jobs, protect families and repair crumbling infrastructure. Congress needs to increase the minimum wage, enact equal pay for women, and restore the value of family.

But because Republicans insist on obstruction, we've made no progress on these and many other important issues. And because President Obama has used the executive authority that is his -- and was of all Presidents before him -- Republicans in the House of Representatives are now suing to stop him from doing his job.

I believe my record clearly shows that I am keeping my promise to the citizens of South Carolina and deserving of your vote for re-election.
