Education is central to Maine's economy and future. As the first person in my family to go to college, I know the difference an education can make. After earning my degree from the University of Maine, I spent 35 years teaching and coaching Maine's youth. During this time, I've seen firsthand what works and what doesn't.
We need to:
· Return local control to our schools and let teachers focus on teaching, not testing.
· Increase job skills training in grades 7--12 for students with the aptitude. Preparing them for when they enter the work force.
· Ensure access to quality vocational training so that we can attract good paying technical jobs to Maine.
· Encourage parents to get involved in their child's education. Studies show that students with involved parents do better academically, behave better and are absent less.
