All too often Ohioans are placed on welfare only to be hired temporarily and be laid back off. Rather than keeping Ohioans in the system, Ohio must continue to develop programs that give Ohioans a path off welfare. This could be done by allowing for an extension of welfare to those Ohioans demonstrating tangible and successful progress in a skilled trade program at a state funded community college or vocational school. Such a program would decrease the recidivism of Ohioans on welfare and it would provide a path to prosperity for those in poverty.
Further, Ohio should require drug-testing before the receipt of any welfare benefit in order to encourage welfare recipients to take the steps necessary to get their lives back on track. If people are going to be on the the government dime, they must be held accountable.
