Issue Position: Education

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

An educated workforce is the human capital that drives a thriving economy. I will bring my expertise in education to increase opportunities to improve and advance quality education in our state. An electorate educated in the history and founding principles of our nation will always work for the good of the Union.

I have been asked what my beliefs and guiding principles are regarding education. Education has a direct impact on our ability to maintain our liberties and freedoms. To quote one author, "A free society cannot survive as a republic without a broad program of general education." W. Cleon Skousen

As your representative I must be open to new ideas, innovation and opportunities to educate our children. I strongly support parental choice whether it's public, charter, home or private school experiences; I recognize that not all children learn using the same instructional methods. My guiding principle is to make decision based on options for parents and always consider what is in best interest of our children. Benjamin Franklin may have said it best "that nothing is more important for the public weal, than to form and train up youth in wisdom and virtue."

The Utah County Academy of Science High School (UCAS) is a good example of an innovative school which I recently played a key role in the initial planning and development. I was part of a leadership team which was tasked with developing a new approach to math and science education.

I am very committed to provide relevant and competitive educational opportunities for the 1,200 students who are currently attending Utah Valley University from our own District 59. I believe that an educated workforce is the human capital that drives a thriving economy. I will bring my expertise in education to increase opportunities to improve and advance quality education in our state.

Val Peterson
