Much of what we do in the Wyoming Legislature is aimed at helping our state, our cities and our counties to create a better way of life for the people who live here. Often that means addressing the issues that matter to small business, which earns the living for Wyoming.
During my tenure in the Wyoming State Senate, I have consistently voted for measures that were aimed at supporting and growing small business in Wyoming. I supported legislation such as the small business investment credit, resident contractor preference and a property tax reduction for land aimed at economic development. I have fought for additional funding for the department of tourism and the Wyoming Business Council. It is important that we continue to invest in our roads and highways -- the lifeblood of state and interstate commerce. Assuring quality education and healthcare helps us grow and diversify business as well. Serving on three different education committees I have consistently voted to adequately fund and build our schools. At the same time I have a record of supporting our
healthcare provider system, which is critical in a rural state.
At the same time I have voted against measures I thought would hurt business. For example, I led the fight against a bill that would have more than doubled OSHA fines, a measure which would have effectively bankrupted a small company in the event of an unfortunate accident. I believe in less government and less regulation, and my votes have reflected that. I am proud to have received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Business.
Our Health and Labor select committee on health insurance exchanges worked hard to understand the impacts of the federal Affordable Care Act and recommended against a state exchange. I am proud of the work; other states who went that way are having to rescind that legislation. The ACA is an expensive overreach for small business. I will always work hard in Cheyenne to keep government out of the way for our citizens and businesses.
