Massachusetts is in the middle of states regarding its rate of taxation, but has one of the most regressive tax systems in the country. That means that with a flat income tax and a flat sales tax, which make up the bulk of our revenue, people who earn little money pay a much greater percentage of their income to tax than people who make more money. This is only going to get worse which is one reason why I am against casino gambling or expansion of the lottery to include the use of credit cards or on-line gaming. We can all agree that none of us want to pay more than is necessary in taxes, and all of us understand it takes money to run a free society. So the issue to me is not just the level of taxation, but what we do with the tax revenue we collect and how we protect it from waste. I will not vote for a tax increase that is not necessary, but I will consider the need for revenue, such as when we must protect our transportation infrastructure. This is why I will proudly accept a very low rating from any agency that wishes to judge me on taxes alone.
