Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Opening

Press Release

Date: July 25, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Ranking Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highways and Transit, will attend the opening ceremony tomorrow morning for the new Metro Silver Line. In May, Norton and her colleagues succeeded in getting $150 million for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) included in the House-passed fiscal year 2015 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill. The $150 million is the sixth installment for WMATA of the $1.5 billion over 10 years for capital improvements authorized in the 2008 Rail Safety Improvement Act, which Norton helped champion as a senior member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The Silver Line is home to five new stations in northern Virginia. The opening ceremony will be attended by several county and state representatives from Virginia, board directors from WMATA, and other esteemed guests. Norton said, "The Silver Line will help make life easier and less stressful for residents in the District of Columbia and for commuters in northern Virginia. This decade-long project will also take more cars off of congested highways, improving our regional and D.C. air quality."
