Over the last 10 years, the Democrat-controlled North Carolina General Assembly increased spending 9 times. To pay for the spending binge, Democrats increased taxes numerous times, including a record $1 billion increase in 2009.
Once again, Gov. Perdue and Democratic legislators are clamoring for another tax increase. But my Republican colleagues and I understand that North Carolina does not have a revenue problem; we have a spending problem.
As Senate President Pro Tem, I will make sure that 2011 is a watershed year for North Carolina -- a year when spending and taxes come down to sustainable levels.
