Issue Position: Improve Transportation

Issues: Transportation

Seniors need transportation to help them maintain their independence. The emerging market for transportation aimed at seniors -- with drivers who are vetted, respectful, friendly, and safe -- should stimulate the development of new businesses, but the state can help by offering insurance and liability protection. We should also support community programs like the Greater Lewes Community Village that coordinates volunteers to provide senior transportation and encourage its replication in other areas.

Because of the high cost of housing in Eastern Sussex, a lot of people who work in our district -- in our health care facilities, nursing homes, restaurants, and stores -- cannot afford to live here. We need better transportation, so that people can get to work and be self-sufficient, and so that local businesses will have a larger pool of potential employees to draw from. Expanding transportation means more than just additional bus routes. It also includes creative solutions like car and van pools, as well as private transportation businesses. Again public/private partnership can help at critical junctures.
