Issue Position: Common Core

Issues: Education

As a local leader who has been involved with creating better schools for over a decade I know firsthand that innovation and progress towards better schools happens best at the local level. I am against any program which reduces the role of a local school board in determining what is best for its community. I believe standards are important and I believe strongly in providing our children with a world class education but parents and teachers in Groton know what is best for Groton students better than bureaucrats in Washington.
A UCONN Poll released just last month found "38 percent believe Common Core is a good policy, compared to 44 percent who believe the opposite" and "the skepticism about Common Core is generally consistent across demographic groups".
A one size fits all nationwide curriculum will dampen the innovative power of local school boards and will fail on the simple premise that what works for a student in Stamford won't necessarily work for a student in Omaha, Nebraska. I am the only candidate for Lieutenant Governor to have the courage to oppose Common Core because I want to protect our great public school system in Connecticut.
