Issue Position

As the Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health during the 111th Congress, Pallone was a primary author of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) and helped to guide it through the House to become law. ACA expands coverage to 30 million people, ends the practice of denying coverage for preexisting conditions or revoking it when people get sick, and makes healthcare more affordable for small businesses and individuals. During consideration of ACA, Pallone was supportive of the public option, which would have created a government run insurance company as an alternative to private insurance companies. Those provisions did not make it in the final law, but he remains supportive of this effort as a co-sponsor of the Public Option Deficit Reduction Act. Pallone wrote the most recent renewal of the Children's Health Insurance Program, which also became law and provides health care coverage for 11 million children.
