Rokita Report 7/4/2014

Statement

Dear Friend,

As we gather with family and friends this Independence Day weekend to enjoy parties, parades and fireworks, it is important to take time to reflect on the freedom that is uniquely ours as Americans, the truly great nation God has blessed us with, and the responsibility we have to safeguard it and better it for future generations.

America faces some difficult challenges. Whether it is the immoral debt that continues to grow, a President who disregards the rule of law, or an economy that is struggling, the progress we have made as a country since July 4, 1776 is threatened.

The debt, totaling $17.5 trillion today with $200 trillion on the way, is the biggest threat to our country's future, making our freedom and the economic security of our children and grandchildren far less certain than that of any generation since the one that pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor in the Declaration of Independence.

Americans have never shied away from great challenges. We fought for freedom and liberty, and won, against the most powerful empire the world had ever known. We led our allies to victories in two world wars to stop evil. We settled a nation stretching 3,000 miles from sea to shining sea, and put a man on the moon decades before we could conceive of iPhones and laptop computers.

Through the successes and the failures, our nation has been the best vehicle ever devised for raising the condition of all men because of the concepts manifested in our founding documents. This fact only remains true to the extent that we follow the Constitution and remain true to our Declaration of Independence. Our President, for example, has little regard for this part.

The rights described in the Declaration of Independence are natural; they come from our Creator. Just as much, we believe that our rights do not come from any man or any government. As such, they cannot depend on, nor can they be changed or taken away by any government, politician or ideologue.

The Declaration's concepts gave birth to our Constitution -- one of the most revolutionary documents in human history. This hard-to-change charter document was the first time that the most successful ideas for the self-governance of people all came together at the same time, in the same place.

And it is only by refocusing on the plain meaning of these documents that we will correctly guide our path as we confront these challenges today.

Just yesterday, I held a Congress on Your Corner event in Lafayette. As with all of my Town Hall and Congress on Your Corner events, we began with a public reading of one of our founding documents. In honor of the holiday, volunteers read the Declaration of Independence.

Independence Day is a great opportunity to talk to your children, family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. What better time to start a dialogue about the exceptional country we live in, and the responsibility we have to better it and pass it down to future generations?

I appreciate the opportunity to share these thoughts with you on our Nation's birthday. I hope you and your loved ones enjoy a safe and blessed holiday.

Sincerely,

Todd Rokita
