Today, U.S. Representative Gary Peters (MI-14) released the following statement on the "grand bargain" legislation to help Detroit emerge from bankruptcy:
"Detroit helped build our state and our nation's middle class, and today is an important step to rebuilding the thriving innovation hub it can be. This is a difficult moment in the history of our state and our nation, and significant sacrifices have been made to put a plan in place to help ensure the solvency of Detroit. This new path forward will ensure accountability and do its best to honor promises made to Detroit's workers and their families. The leadership from labor, the business community, charitable organizations, and city and state elected officials and the resiliency and determination of Detroiters will make the future bright again.
"In Washington, I will continue to fight to make Detroit strong. Whether it's encouraging public private partnerships like the State Small Business Credit Initiative that helps small businesses get the capital they need to grow or building support for the New International Trade Crossing that will create hundreds of new jobs, I know that we can find practical, common-sense solutions to invest in Detroit's talented workers, entrepreneurs, innovators and manufacturers to make sure the city bounces back stronger than ever. "
