Is there anything more important than a job? A job provides a person the ability to earn money and gives that person purchase power. When this purchase power is exercised the economy is stimulated. A job also provides a person a sense of self-worth and pride and is an example to a worker's children.
We need to support workers.
We need to insure that workers have a livable wage. We need to increase the minimum wage. We need to insure that a livable minimum wage is tied to inflation so workers do not lose ground over time. We need to support unions and the protections they inherently provide to workers.
A livable minimum wage is just the beginning. These same workers need affordable housing. These same workers need the financial protection of paid sick leave. These same workers need improved access to affordable child care and after school care options for the benefit of their children.
With steady income that rises with inflation and that is not subject to "loss" from high child care costs, low unlivable wages, etc., these workers will keep the District 19 economy strong and growing.
I will work with small businesses to provide them tax breaks designed to encourage and provide for their continued financial profitability.
I will meet with workers, unions and small businesses alike to implement programs and laws that will benefit all three. Workers, unions and small businesses have an interdependent relationship with needs/benefits that are complimentary. Picture a row of small businesses providing services and products while employing workers earning at least a livable minimum wage and these same workers spending their earnings, at least in part, at these same small businesses. That is Community. That is the District 19 I envision and will promote.
