Issue Position: Taxes and Spending

"The problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that government spends too much." -- Ronald Reagan
Maryland is currently ranked as having the 4th Highest Tax Burden in the nation when it comes to taxing its citizens. Enough is enough.
Among other mistakes, in 2007 the legislature jammed through the largest tax increase in Maryland history. Raising the sales tax from 5% to 6% (a 20% increase) has led to an actual drop in revenue as many drive to other states to make purchases more cheaply than they can here at home. As the lead sponsor of legislation returning the sales tax back to 5%, I will further the fight to lower this -- and all -- taxes -- should I be elected to the Maryland Senate.
As for the budget, I would scrutinize every agency and program -- including the so-called sacred cows -- for areas to be cut. There can be no unquestioned "entitlements" when people are losing their jobs and homes. There can be no "sacred cows." Again, every agency and program must be closely scrutinized.
