U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) has signed on as an original cosponsor of H.R. 4628, the Military Opportunities for Mothers (MOM) Act, which would extend maternity leave for women serving in the military from six weeks to 12 weeks. This bipartisan bill would bring the military's maternity leave policies in line with the Family and Medical Leave Act.
The bill is sponsored by Reps. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) and Kristi Noem (R-S.D.) and is cosponsored by an additional 65 members of Congress.
"Female service members should not have to choose between their dedication to our country and spending the first few weeks of their baby's life at home. Women are serving with distinction and honor in our armed forces here in America and around the world. This legislation will allow these women to spend six additional weeks recovering from childbirth and bonding with their newborns, showing them our appreciation for their service for our nation."
