The issue topping the list for voters is taxes. Whether it's our local property taxes, or increases in sales and gas taxes, voters feel that we're not getting commensurate value from our contributions relative to our burden. Westfield has experienced a 38% decrease in local aid from the state since 2008, in spite of increased tax revenue flowing to the state largely from increased sales and gas tax as well as increased fees, such as those most recently imposed by the Registry of Motor Vehicles and the reinstitution of tolls on exits 1-7 on the Mass Turnpike.
