U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke today about additional steps that Congress should take to ensure that our allies in Eastern Europe have the resources they need to respond to Russia's aggression.
Excerpts of his remarks are below.
"It's important that the Congress step up and participate in this process, and I believe that sanctions are not enough.
"The two other things that we should do, and I would encourage the Majority Leader to allow us an open process to allow votes on these two items, is provide additional military assistance to the Ukrainians. So far, only uniforms, medicine, and MREs, or rations, have been provided. They need the military assistance necessary to defend themselves.
"And secondly, we need to alleviate the stranglehold that Vladimir Putin has on Ukraine and other countries in Europe, which is the fact that they are, by and large, their only source of energy, and he uses energy as a weapon.
"We have the means within our capability to export natural gas over the long haul, which will be a mortal threat to the Russian economy and alleviate the stranglehold on countries that are looking for freedom and opportunity."
