The Duckworth Diary - March 7, 2014

Statement

This week, I voted yes on The Home Heating Emergency Assistance Through Transportation (HHEATT) Act of 2014. Propane and heating oil shortages have plagued several areas of the country, notably in the state of Illinois, and the existing delivery infrastructure hasn't been able to keep up with demand increases resulting from below-average temperatures. This bill would allow propane for heating to be transported more easily and would keep flood insurance premiums from rising.

I then met with officials from Elgin Community College. We talked about the importance of Career and Technical Education as well as student loans and college affordability.

I voted yes this week on the Energy Efficiency Improvement Act of 2014. The legislation would combine the elements of several energy efficiency bills that deal with federal lease documents, federal information technology standards, data centers and federal benchmarking.

I was also happy to support the Million Women Mentors initiative, which is changing STEM education, pathways and careers by engaging one million science, technology, engineering, and math mentors to support girls & young women with STEM skills.

Additionally, I met with members from the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA). They told me about the great work they are doing to improve access to quality, affordable housing in Illinois and we discussed how Congress can help as we consider tax and housing finance reform proposals. I was particularly excited to hear about the progress they are making on behalf of Veterans and people with disabilities across our state.

Lastly, I cosponsored and voted in favor of the Homeowner Flood Insurance Accountability Act, which passed the House of Representatives. Last year, the 8th District experienced severe flooding that resulted in major property damage. With the significant snowfall that took place this winter it is crucial that we prepare for spring flooding and that my neighbors have access to affordable flood insurance. This legislation helps ensure that my constituents aren't overcharged for flood insurance and subject to unfair rate increases because of remapping.

I hope you are having a great week.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Duckworth
