Issue Position: Free to Be Initiative

Issue Position

Carl DeMaio is on-campus at four local colleges in San Diego this week to canvass for support among college students and unveil a major policy proposal called the Free to Be Initiative designed to outline a series of policy positions that will better resonate with college students and youth.

The Free to Be Initiative covers changes in student loans and improve the job market for college graduates. In addition, DeMaio lays out his plans to help these college students, also known by some as Millennials, secure a future where they are successful.

In his Free To Be Initiative, DeMaio covers five major topics.

Free to Be In the Job of My Dreams

The U.S. economy is still struggling -- meaning too many individuals are unemployed or under-employed. Even if they can find a job, too many college graduates are unable to find a job in the career path of their earned degree.

Free to Be Who I Am, With Full and Equal Rights

Carl DeMaio believes Washington should be focused on balancing the budget, revitalizing the economy, and providing quality services to taxpayers -- and leave the social issues out of our politics.

Free to Be Able to Afford My Tuition

Carl DeMaio is concerned about the skyrocketing costs of college tuition and is committed to enacting reforms to make college education more affordable.

Bipartisan legislation passed over the summer to benchmark student loan interest rates to the federal treasury note rate is a good start, but only the beginning of what should be a much more comprehensive reform plan to make student loans more accessible and affordable.

Free to Be Not Stuck Paying Off Debts That Aren't Mine

Washington politicians are running up trillions in debt -- and expecting future generations to pay off their irresponsible tab. Every dime of debt today means the college students of today will have to pay more or get less tomorrow when their generation is in charge. Carl DeMaio calls the debt crisis mess 'generational inequity.'

Free to Be In Control of My Health Care

Carl DeMaio believes America's health care system is broken. Misguided and irrational government mandates have only made the situation worse. ObamaCare is built around pumping more money into the broken system. In contrast, Carl DeMaio believes we should focus on reducing costs of the system itself.
