Collins Welcomes Hatchery Decision

Press Release

Date: Nov. 15, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Doug Collins (GA-09) today welcomed the official word from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that no fish hatcheries will close in the current fiscal year. Northeast Georgians had anticipated this decision pending the release of the agency's full report of the fish hatchery system.

Congressman Collins formally requested a decision from FWS Director Dan Ashe in September of this year amid concerns that the Chattahoochee Forest National Fish Hatchery in Fannin County was at risk of closure. In areas affected by hyrdopower, trout mitigation hatcheries carry significant economic impact in bolstering tourism and providing for the local population.

"It's a great relief that the hatcheries in Northeast Georgia will stay in operation for the immediate future," Congressman Collins said."I'm ready to work with the Fish and Wildlife Service to come up with a long term solution that's going to work for Northeast Georgia's economy."
