Everyone should be treated equally under the law. Love is love and I'm thrilled the Supreme Court overturned the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and returned marriage equality to California in June. We should all have the same chance to live up to our given potential. Discrimination based on race, creed, color, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity simply has no place in modern society, and we must do all we can to stamp it out.
What I am Doing for You
I cosponsored H.R. 377, the Paycheck Fairness Act. This bill would improve pay equity protections for women.
I cosponsored H. Res. 19, which would express the sense of the House of Representatives that the Senate should ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
I signed an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court in the case of United States v. Windsor, urging it to strike down Section Three of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. Section Three defines marriage for federal purposes as being only between one man and one woman.
I cosponsored H.R. 1755, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. This bill would ban discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
I agreed to cosponsor the Respect for Marriage Act. This bill would repeal the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which prevents federal recognition of lawful same-sex marriages.
