Today, Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) signed on as an orginal co-sponsor to the bi-partisan Marriage and Religious Freedom Act, sponsored by Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho). This bill protects tax-exempt status for groups defining marriage as between one man and one woman. It also ensures their access to federal grants, contracts, licenses and similar provisions. Congressman Cassidy released the following statement:
"As we saw recently in New Mexico, non-profit groups and businesses are now being penalized by public officials for their beliefs on marriage. This trend financially threatens churches and charitable organizations who use their tax-exempt status to assist and uplift the poor. We must make sure these groups are not shoved out of the public square. President Obama once said that "Americans hold a wide range of views" on marriage and we must maintain "our nation's commitment to religious freedom.' This bill would make him honor that promise."
