Shelley's Weekly Update - September 1, 2013

Statement

Date: Sept. 1, 2013

Dear Friend,

It has been another busy week at home. I have toured a local pharmacy in Charleston, an Amtrak station in Prince, the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Mount Hope, a grocery store in Huntington and spoke at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce annual meeting in White Sulphur Springs.

Hearing from You

I love being home because it is gives me an opportunity to hear from you. I am your voice in Washington, D.C., and I always want to hear about the issues that are facing you and your family.

Building a Stronger Economy Through Commonsense Solutions

I spoke at the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce annual meeting last week about building a stronger economy through commonsense solutions. You can't build a house without a solid foundation. Similarly, we can't rebuild our nation's broken economy without structural changes and commonsense solutions.

Over the past five years, President Obama has been trying to fix our broken economy with band-aids and short-term fixes instead of providing long-term solutions to the problems facing our country. Failed stimulus spending, higher taxes and faulty investments have not led our nation out of the enormous debt we are facing or helped get the almost 20 million Americans who are unemployed or underemployed working again.

So what can we do? Moving towards energy independence, reining in regulations, addressing our nation's almost $17 trillion debt, reforming broken promises and repealing ObamaCare are just some of the ways we can build a more solid economic infrastructure. And the good news is that the House has already taken positive steps forward on all of these fronts.

Happy Labor Day!

This Monday we celebrate the many workers who keep our nation moving forward. I want to thank you for all of your hard work. I hope everyone has a safe weekend and enjoys some time with their family and friends.

It is an honor to serve you.

Sincerely,

Shelley Moore Capito
Member of Congress
