Lujan Grisham Statement on Horse Slaughter Decision

Statement

Date: Aug. 2, 2013
Location: Albuquerque, NM

U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01), a member of the House Agriculture Committee, this evening released the following statement after U.S. District Court Judge Christina Armijo issued a restraining order for two domestic horse slaughter facilities:

"I am pleased that the U.S. District Court has issued a restraining order for two horse slaughter facilities set to open next week, including one in Roswell, New Mexico. This ruling affirms what we've known for a long time and what I have communicated to the USDA and the White House: in addition to being cruel and inhumane, horse slaughter poses numerous environmental and food safety concerns that warrant closer investigation. I urge the USDA to conduct a thorough review of this practice and take into account the views of the 70 percent of New Mexicans who oppose horse slaughter."
