Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement after it was reported that Al-Shabaab, a terrorist organization in Somalia, attacked a United Nations compound in Mogadishu yesterday.

"I strongly condemn yesterday's terrorist attack on the United Nations compound in Mogadishu. My heart goes out to the families of all the victims of this despicable, cowardly act of violence.

"Al-Shabaab's desperate attempt to throw Somalia back into violence and chaos will not succeed. With the help of the United Nations, the Somali people are building up their country. I saw the progress they're making when I visited Mogadishu in February.

"Anyone who attacks an organization that is providing clean water, education and jobs to the Somali people is an enemy of the Somali people. Al-Shabaab cannot claim to be Somali and follow Islam when it killsinnocent Somalis and violates the central tenets of Islam. They only deserve to be called what they are: terrorists."
