Issue Position: Land Access

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

Daniel is working with Families For Outdoor Recreation, a Billings based organization that has focused on maintaining access to public lands for all. Land access for recreational use has been diminishing over several years. There are over 180 anti-access groups located in Montana that obtain the majority of their funding from out-of-state donors. Under the guise of environmental protection, the long-term goal of many of these groups is to ensure that Montanans can no longer bicycle, motorcycle, back country ski, snowmobile, ride horses or recreate on these "public" lands.

One of the largest concerns Daniel has is the amount of improperly designated wilderness land located in Montana that is still defined as a "wilderness study area." These wilderness areas are inaccessible to everyone except hikers. In Montana alone, there are approximately 5,000,000 acres of improperly designated areas that the Forest Service and BLM have officially reported.

Daniel will work to maintain and increase access to these lands, and prevent any new environmental measures that are considered anti-access.
