Gustavo Rivera believes that New York City needs more affordable housing. He has fought to preserve affordable housing and to help Bronxites find affordable housing options. Gustavo has come up with innovative solutions to help preserve affordable housing and has reached out to seniors who are eligible for specific programs such as SCRIE.

Fighting for Stronger Rent Laws and Tenant Protections

As a tenant in a rent-regulated unit, Gustavo Rivera knows first-hand the day to day struggles of tenants in New York City and the Bronx. When rent regulation laws were set to expire, Senator Rivera fought to not only extend tenant protections, but to strengthen them. For the first time in history, rent regulation laws were strengthened. While Senator Rivera wanted to make them stronger, he and other elected officials pushed to make the extension for two years so that we can continue to strengthen tenant protections.

Addressing Issues with Section 8

Gustavo Rivera has fought to ensure that tenants in New York City Housing Authority buildings and individuals receiving Section 8 vouchers from NYCHA have a safe and secure place to live. Last year he joined the New York City Alliance to Preserve Public Housing and also testified at the NYCHA Public Hearing on behalf of the hundreds of tenants who have come to his office or reached out to Gustavo about housing issues since he was elected. Gustavo has continued to listen to tenants and is working to ensure that issues with Section 8 and NYCHA do not have a catastrophic impact on tenants in the 33rd Senate District.
