Hoyer Statement on Hispanic Heritage Month

Statement

Date: Sept. 14, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins tomorrow, September 15, and runs through October 15. Please see below for a Spanish language version:

"Tomorrow we celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, an opportunity to acknowledge the countless contributions Latinos have made to our nation. During this time, I join in recognizing how the Hispanic community has shaped and improved our nation -- through science, sports, politics, entertainment, business, and many other fields. The roots of the Hispanic community in our country run as deep as its history, and Latinos have played a central role in helping our nation succeed and grow. We are especially thankful for the service and sacrifices of Latino service-members on the front lines in Afghanistan, as well as those who have served in prior conflicts throughout our nation's history. During Hispanic Heritage Month, we look back on the community's achievements while also celebrating their continued role strengthening America.

"Over the past year, we have made progress in moving our nation and economy forward, but there is much work left to be done. We must enact policies that allow all Americans, including Latinos, to have the opportunity to find well paying jobs, send their kids to college, afford quality health care, and save for retirement. House Democrats' Make It In America plan will invest in building these opportunities so all Americans can pursue the American Dream. I am proud to work with my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and throughout Congress to fight for these policies that give all Americans an equal chance. As we reflect over the next month on the proud tradition of Latinos in our country, we must also look to the future to ensure that all American families are given the tools and opportunity to succeed."
