Due to the extreme drought, this summer has been particularly hard on Hoosiers, especially the agricultural community. One of the worst droughts in 50 years during peak growing season has severely hurt the corn and soybean crops. Yields this year are predicted to be significantly low across the state. Since these two crops are the majority of Indiana's agricultural production, Hoosier farmers will be facing difficult circumstances this year. In response to the losses farmers will be experiencing, the USDA has declared all 92 Indiana counties as a natural disaster area.
Loss Assessment Reports, examined by the USDA, have shown that sufficient production losses have warranted a Secretarial disaster designation. This means that farmers and farm operators can be eligible for assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA). This assistance includes FSA emergency loans.
