Issue Position: Property Taxes

Young people are fleeing Connecticut because property taxes are among the highest in the country -- and everyday rising higher. As a young professional looking to purchase his first home, Matt Lesser understands the importance of keeping taxes under control. Attracting a younger workforce, and allowing our children to live and work in the towns in which they grew up, is absolutely key to our long term competitiveness.

Moreover, Matt understands that property taxes hurt seniors and others living on fixed incomes most of all.

We cannot tackle property taxes without tackling the rising costs of education. In Durham, for example, nearly 80 cents out of every tax dollar go to fund local schools.

For too long politicians have promised gimmicks and band-aid solutions. We need effective leadership in Hartford to make sure the state fully funds its obligations, and lifts the burden off local taxpayers. We need to start by funding PILOT and ECS, two programs that would bring millions of dollars into our towns, and reduce the burden on our local municipalities.
