There are a number of critical health issues facing our community. Obesity, diabetes, and infant mortality are among these serious and common health challenges. According to a 2009/2010 report by the Obesity/Overweight Prevention and Policy Council of Tarrant County, 19% of children age 2-14 in Tarrant County are obese. Approximately 66% of adults in Tarrant County are obese. Similarly heart disease which is commonly associated with obesity is the number one cause of death in our county.

The same 2009/2010 Tarrant county health study also found that diabetes is a health issue on the rise. Similarly, infant mortality has been a major challenge in our community, and like obesity and diabetes it can be dramatically improved through diet and exercise. A proactive approach is critical to solving the problem of infant mortality as the most important factor in determining the health of a child is the mothers health prior to pregnancy. I will work with non-profit and community organizations to provide health forums and fairs so that our community has the information and resources to access quality health-care.

Finally access to adequate medical coverage is a another major health care issue that must be addressed. Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured residents. I will advocate for reforms that makes health care more affordable, holds insurers more accountable, and expands coverage to all Texans.
