Aloha,

In the May edition of the Grants Newsletter, research opportunities being offered by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense and NASA and the Department of Justice are highlighted in this latest federal grants list. These programs are annually funded and are currently "in cycle." The research opportunities are specialized in most cases and geared toward experienced researchers.
Also in the May Grants Newsletter, the Department of Agriculture has a number of programs that should be of special interest.

Farm to School Grant Program provides grants and technical assistance, in implementing farm to school programs that improve access to local foods in eligible schools. Applicants are encouraged to first submit a Letter of Intent and then apply for either a Planning Grant or an Implementation Grant. Planning grants are expected to range from $20,000-$45,000 and represent approximately 25 percent of the total awards. Implementation grants are expected to range from $65,000 - $100,000 and represent approximately 75 percent of the total awards. For both types of grants, the applicant must provide at least 25 percent of the costs of the grant project, as the Federal share of costs for this grant cannot exceed 75 percent of the total cost of the project, as required by the HHFKA. Applicants must choose between submitting a Planning grant or an Implementation grant. Only one application per eligible entity is permitted. Additional information on the Farm to School Program is available at: http://www.fans.usda.gov/cnd/F2S/.

The Emerging Markets Program assists U.S. entities in developing, maintaining, or expanding exports of U.S. agricultural commodities and products by funding activities that improve emerging markets' food and rural business systems, including reducing potential trade barriers in such markets. Market Access Program grants are designed to create, expand, and maintain foreign markets for U.S. agricultural commodities and products through cost-share assistance. Financial assistance under the MAP will be made available on a competitive basis, and applications will be reviewed against the evaluation criteria contained herein and in the MAP regulations. All U.S. agricultural commodities, except tobacco, are eligible for consideration.

FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Department of Labor (DOL) this month announced a solicitation for a new round of grant applications for the $2 billion Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant (TAA CCCTG) Program. $500 million in grants will be made available to support partnerships between community colleges and employers to develop programs that provide pathways to good jobs. Through these grants, schools will be able to expand their capacity to put more people into high-quality jobs and start new careers in fields ranging from advanced manufacturing and transportation to health care and STEM -- science, technology, engineering and math.

FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program operates with the primary goal of meeting the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. This program is currently under development for 2012. Taking advantage of the AFG Workshops can help communities strengthen their applications.

Finally, the Department of Justice Community Policing Development (CPD) is accepting applications until May 21. CPD funds are used to advance the practice of community policing in law enforcement agencies through training and technical assistance, the development of innovative community policing strategies, applied research, guidebooks, and best practices that are national in scope. The 2012 CPD program will fund projects that influence practice, promote awareness, and/or increase skills and abilities related to various topic areas listed in the solicitation. The COPS Office requires that all proposals be national in scope.
