We have paid a terrible price to wage the war on terror. We have lost brave soldiers and we have spent huge sums that we and our children are obligated to pay. What price for freedom from terror? It is a question we face together, and we must answer it. Congress and the President, with our demand, must make the economic sacrifices necessary to fund the war. We have debated giving up some rights, some privacy, to fight terror at home. The Patriot Act has been discussed and cussed. It is important that we are, for the most part, fighting this war over there. It began in our skies, on our soil, in two skyscrapers in downtown New York, in a Pennsylvania field and at the Pentagon. Our enemies make their plans, and strike, from afar; taking the war to them, on their turf and not ours, is far preferable to anything similar on our soil.
