Issue Position: Campaign Contributions

Issue Position

Q: With the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that lifted many limits on campaign spending and contributions, it has been reported that 2010 may be a record-breaker for money spent on a midterm election. Do you feel that campaign contribution limits should be reinstated? And in the name of transparency, would you divulge your top campaign contributors?

A: Over $2 billion will be spent on this year's mid-term election. A record. I shudder to think of how many people that would feed, or jobs that would create. It is mind-boggling. I can say from experience money isn't everything, and it is certainly not healthy to a democracy. Corporations and foreign countries should not be able to buy elections.

I do make my top campaign contributions public, and all of my contributions over $200. I believe that spending limits and transparency are the best way to make sure the public can make informed decisions. The tone of this year's election has been nasty. I continue my pledge to never run a negative ad. I wish more of my colleagues would do the same.
