Keeping citizens safe is one of the government's primary responsibilities. The challenge of fulfilling that responsibility is great, but I believe it is possible by enforcing current laws, not creating new ones. Violent and repeat offenders should pay for their crimes and others with the will to change their lives should have the opportunity to do so with the help of Day Reporting Centers; Drug, DUI and Mental Health Courts; and expanded probation and treatment options.

Ensuring the safety and security of our cities should not be left to law enforcement officials alone. Parents, communities, churches and other civic organizations must create standards for acceptable behavior. Only by working together can we create safer communities and eliminate some of the extensive costs it currently takes to operate our Department of Corrections.
