Solutions:
*Change Illinois' school funding system so it reduces its reliance on property taxes. Residents in school districts with low property values, like Rockford, pay a higher percentage of their property taxes to fund education. That affects a community's ability to offer a quality education.
*Encourage a community wide effort to improve education that includes parents, educators, businesses, religious leaders and grassroots efforts.
*Make college education more affordable for middle class families, who've been hit hard by the recession.
*Support early childhood education. Too many of our students enter school unprepared. Leaving them behind is not an option. I believe early childhood education produces substantial educational, social and financial benefits for children and our communities.
