Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) voted last night to extend the payroll tax cut for middle class Americans. This proposal would have extended and increased the current payroll tax cut for another year, putting 3.1 percent of American workers' paychecks back in their pockets. The motion was defeated by a vote of 183-244.
"This tax cut would benefit millions of Americans by putting an average of $1,500 back in middle class families' pockets. During these tough economic times, people need relief. I'm disappointed that Washington Republicans blocked this commonsense proposal to help working families who are struggling to make ends meet," said Rep. McNerney.
The proposal contained provisions asking millionaires to help pay for this middle class tax cut. Congress may consider other related measures before adjourning for the end of the year.
"I urge my colleagues to help real people before leaving for the holidays, instead of continuing to provide benefits and loopholes for corporations and the wealthiest people at the expense of the middle class," said Rep. McNerney.
