Voter Identification Laws

Statement

On Monday, I participated in a House Judiciary Committee hearing on State Voting Law Changes and Voter's Rights. Tennesseans Lee and Phyllis Campbell were on hand to testify about their difficulties attaining the free photo identification the law is supposed to provide at their local Driver Service Center. I spoke about Tennessee's new voter identification laws and am concerned that word of the new law gets to every Tennessean because nobody should be denied the basic and fundamental right to vote. I have been quite outspoken on this issue and have recorded public service announcements and attended numerous meetings on the new voter identification laws. Recently, as a member of Democratic Caucus Voting Rights Working Group, I met with House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Emanuel Cleaver, Congressman John Lewis, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and Leadership Conference in Civil and Human Rights President Wade Henderson and others to discuss our concerns on the voter identification law.
