Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) issued the following statement today in response to the Social Security Administration's announcement that Social Security beneficiaries will receive an increase in their Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for the first time in three years.
Approximately 55 million Americans rely on Social Security benefits, including 42.5 million seniors, 10.5 million disabled Americans, and 2 million surviving spouses.
"Social Security ties generations together, and is a promise made to millions of American workers that after decades of service, they can rely upon its safety net in retirement. This COLA increase is a simple adjustment but critical to keeping that promise, and will enable millions of Americans to pay their bills, buy groceries, and keep their homes. I have consistently fought to protect Social Security, and the benefits that it provides to so many--and will continue to do so in the face of Republican budget cuts that threaten to dismantle this essential lifeline."
